FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
South Georgia College Boasts New Student
Housing Community: Tiger Village
DOUGLAS, Ga., August 31, 2007–As South Georgia College (SGC) evolves to accommodate student growth, so has its campus. The newest student housing community since 1974, Tiger Village offers two types of resident suites that will add 252 beds to the campus.
Developer Ambling University Development Group (AUDG) and general contractor Juneau Construction Company broke ground for the $15.8 million student community in January. The three-story facility was designed to create an environment that supports and enhances academic programs to attract quality students, faculty, and staff. All common areas have been situated in the central wing of the building and have been designed to encourage student interaction. An open staircase extends from the building’s main lobby, providing a focal point for the central common area.
The first unit type is a 978 square foot suite with four single-occupied bedrooms, two bathrooms with private vanities, and a common living area. The second unit type is a 406 square foot semi-suite with two single-occupied bedrooms and one bathroom with two private vanities. Each unit has the appropriate amenities required for meeting the needs of today’s 21st century student. All suites are equipped with moveable furniture to allow for several different configurations and to ensure optimal energy management, digital thermostats are included in each unit. A two-bedroom, two-bathroom 978 square foot resident manager apartment is located adjacent to the ground floor common space.
“Tiger Village will serve as a gateway to success for our students as they enter South Georgia College and advance through their educational careers,” said Dr. Torri Lilly, president of South Georgia College. “The appearance of this project is striking, thanks to the guidance and genuine focus of Ambling University Development Group.”
The new facilities were adapted to accommodate and preserve the panoramic view of the campus that contributes to its unique identity. Clower Hall was renovated to serve as a student center for all students, including commuting students and contains the new Living Learning Center. To retain the historical character of the building and to capture the light provided by the large clerestory windows, program areas are divided with approximately 10-foot partitions, with a large open seating area at the center. The gymnasium floor has been restored to its original finish. Acoustical wall panels and area rugs serve to dampen sound in quieter program rooms; and furniture with durable, cleanable upholstery helps to mitigate noise in the large open seating area.
“The significance of the completion of Tiger Village is a milestone for our campus’ building history,” said Dr. Lilly. “Ambling was selected for its proven track record for developing projects on time and under budget, we started in January and in less than a year we have 252 beds. This is our first new residence hall since 1974 and offers a higher quality of living for incoming students. We are very excited to have worked with such a professional development team.”
